Gayety History

So what’s the backstory of this wacky comedy cabaret?

Gayety is a queer humor collective. Well maybe not a queer humor collective, since there’s only three  of us here in New York at the moment. Maybe “a couple of friends that also happen to be queer/performance artists/comics and so put on shows that are low-key but high entertainment in comfortable, accessible venues and maybe sometimes there are snacks.”

Gayety started in Bevin’s one bedroom (but nevertheless filled with animals. It’s truly like the cantina bar in Star Wars) apartment in West Philly. It was merely a super fun writing group then. With the helping of founding member R.M. Gayety became a zine, a website and a performance series. After experimenting with a few different venues, Gayety (Gayety the performance series that is) began filling Philadelphia’s Joe Coffee with our strange, hysterically funny and thought provoking little show which brought together funny queers of all performance persuasions. And trivia. Always trivia, with mostly awesome prizes unless Kelli went unsupervised to the dollar store and brought back canned sardines and spam. [Or a partially used roll of duct tape. That happened once, too.]

In 2006, Kelli moved to Portland for a year and produced a Gayety there, which even include a token straightgirl comic (they made her wear a rainbow flag to perform) and outgrew its venue the very first night. In March 2007, Kelli moved back to the east coast, and Kelli and Bevin were reunited (it kind of looked like Miss Piggy and Kermit in the meadow scene in the first Muppet Movie) and decided New York needed Gayety too. We had two successful shows at the LGBT Center in late 2007 and early 2008 and were in the continual NYC connundrum of trying to find comfortable, accessible venues that were cheap enough that we could keep the door price low.

So here we are in 200 and fine, in a brand new amazing venue (Re/Dress–New York City’s only plus size vintage and resale boutique), ready to see if Brooklyn will love Gayety as much as Philadelphia, Portland and Manhattan.
